Here’s a throwback to the 1990s. Championship Manager 2 was one of those games that was massively popular but didn’t quite attract people straight off the bat. First off, if you weren’t a football fan, you probably wouldn’t be too interested. And secondly, if you decided to take the leap and buy the game, you may have ended up feeling scammed. This was a MANAGER game (something the title of the game pretty much explained), so you didn’t actually get to play football in it. You just managed the teams playing eg. formations, which players played, which player to buy from other teams etc.
But if you decided to stick with it, despite the initial disappointment, it ended up being pretty addictive. The game was entirely text-based for matches, and while this initially might have seemed a turn off, it was still exciting to see how games played out. Because of licensing issues, the game didn’t have the players’ real names. So instead of Ronaldo (O Fenômeno), you’d have something like Romaldo, but it was pretty clear who each player was.
