You may have come across the occasional YouTube or Twitter beef, but how about your everyday internet beef? It’s been around for a while and can take many forms. The Reddit vs Digg days, culminating in the Digg Exodus / Quit Digg Day on 30th August 2010 is a good example. Reddit changed its logo that day to welcome the influx of former Digg users who were upset about Digg management’s changes to the site.
Now the beef between Automattic and WP Engine is heating up. In short, Automattic, the founder of the open-source software WordPress, feels that WP Engine hasn’t been contributing enough to the WordPress project despite making hundreds of millions in revenue. WP Engine feels that Automattic is being tyrannical and going against the ethos of open source. Now Automattic has set up a WP Engine tracker that lists the number of websites that have switched from WP Engine. The number is over 17,000 and various promotions from other hosting companies are on offer to encourage site owners to take the leap.Â
Automattic says, “Given the egregious legal attacks by WP Engine against WordPress co-founder Matt Mullenweg, a number of their customers have been looking for alternative hosting”. WP Engine’s position is that “Matt Mullenweg and Automattic’s self-proclaimed scorched earth campaign against WP Engine has harmed not just our company, but the entire WordPress ecosystem.”Â
