There are some rumours going round that SBF is tipped for a presidential pardon from Biden. So there are a couple of things to unpack here. Biden is a barely functioning cadaver who’s legacy will be the Palestinian genocide. It’s unclear if he can even think straight, let alone understand the idea behind pardoning someone who’s serving a 25-year sentence on multiple charges of wire fraud and money laundering.
SBF is serving time for misappropriating around $8 billion in customer funds during his tenure as CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX. But there’s a key point. He was a massive donor to the Democrats – most of his $40 million donations went to them. There’s a great deal of cynicism around this because people understand how the system works. Revolving doors, money, power and so on.Â
Employees who were complicit in the FTX fraud have already had their sentences reduced for ‘good behaviour’. It’s reminiscent of the Elizabeth Holmes trial, in which many people felt she’d get a lenient sentence despite the massive fraud that Theranos turned out to be. For some, 11 years is too little for the billions she misused and playing with people’s health.Â
So if SBF gets a pardon, what message does it send? If you don’t have money and connections, you’ll rot away in a jail cell. If you’re well-connected, don’t worry. You can commit one of the largest financial frauds of all time, and there’ll be an escape route.
