Using ChatGPT for reviews

Here’s a pretty funny review of Chinatown in Bangkok. The person posting it forgot to leave out ChatGPT’s response that it’d be happy to generate a review. A couple of years ago, there were some stats out there of how many fake reviews there were on the internet. The figure was in the hundreds of millions. It’s likely this has been bumped up quite a bit with generative AI in the mix. For the time being, generative AI comments and reviews are fairly easy to spot (even when the poster remembers to remove the first paragraph from the bot saying they’re happy to help). They’re often called out and are noticeable for their ‘AI-style’ of writing. But it’ll be interesting to see how detection tech adapts to improvements in AI writing. It’s already a minefield to navigate, given that positive reviews can be purchased and can bypass existing verification mechanisms.
